The Queenstons - What You Do (Frostbreath Remix)

The Queenstons, Frostbreath / Drum & Bass

Nov 10, 2009 / 320kbps MP3 / YouTube / Cubase SX3 / Complete / Remix (Implicit authorization)

It was the height of my obsession with the Lapfox Trax project (as of 2021, known as Halley Labs) and I had just struck a goldmine of inspiration with them giving out vocal tracks for many of their songs. This was my first ever upload on YouTube and somehow garnered the most attention of anything I've ever created, getting over 30,000 views, and for that reason it gets to sit here at the top. So I guess I peaked over a decade ago, sigh.

NeoClubber - Dreams Come True (Frostbreath Remix)

NeoClubber, Frostbreath / Dance Pop

2009 / 320kbps MP3 / ACIDplanet / Cubase SX3 / Complete / Remix (Contest)

So, what do the top two songs here in the archive have in common, aside from both being made in 2009? Cubase's built-in vocoder! I'm pretty sure that was a major factor for this getting an honorable mention in the remix contest, because it sure wasn't the rest of this. I do think that good ol' Sytrus supersaw is a nice, nostalgic flavor, though.

Skrillex ft. Damian Marley - Make It Bun Dem (Noisemarine & Frostbreath Remix)

Skrillex, Damian Marley, Noisemarine, Frostbreath / Moombahton

Nov 18, 2012 / 320kbps MP3 / YouTube, SoundCloud / ACID Pro 7 / Complete / Remix (Contest)

My second and last (so far) venture into trying out Moombahton, which was probably at its peak at the time, which in my opinion went really well despite not really performing very well in the contest, though that's always been less than even a a secondary concern for participating in contests, which have always been more about working with the material of artists I'd never do otherwise, though, well, Skrillex isn't exactly somebody I'd never have thought to remix at the time, I don't even particularly care for the original of this in comparison to, say, the entirety of Bangarang, but hey. At least the vocals for this lent themselves pretty well to the moombah style after a slight pitching down. My girlfriend really likes this one.

Kitcaliber - Radio Dreamin' (S.P Remix)

Kitcaliber, Smooth.Play

Apr 3, 2012 / 320kbps MP3 / YouTube / ACID Pro 7 / Complete / Remix (Implicit authorization)

My personal favorite of all the Lapfox remixes I made, mostly because it's so different from everything else I made under that category. Heck, I don't even know what to call it genre-wise. My only real gripe with it is that I wish I had made the piano intro a bit more involved than the simple loop.

Sinistra

Noisemarine, Samatka / Dubstep

Jul 19, 2010 / 128kbps MP3 / Fur Affinity / Acid Xpress / Complete / Original

This one is an odd duck within the greater context of dubstep, especially at the time, when the scene was having its internal turmoil and division between the "old school" and "aggro" styles (fuck off, I'm not calling it "brostep"), since it's got the midrangey wobble bass without it being aggressive at all. In any case, this is where the Noisemarine alias got its start, though I've also retroactively attributed a few other things to it.

Let You Go

Ian Van Dahl, Push, D3F0RM3D / Breakcore

Apr 4, 2009 / 128kbps MP3 / Fur Affinity / ACID Xpress 7 / Complete / Remix (Bootleg)

This was my first venture into heavily sampling copyrighted material, no doubt inspired by having listened to basically nothing but VULPvibe/Lapfox stuff all year. There's a lot of weird choices in here but I still have a very soft spot for this since it feels like one of the major turning points in the way I approached making music back then, and as such it gets a spot in the green category.

CYBER CIRCUIT 199X

Forgebold / Acid House

2020 / 320kbps MP3 / No upload / ACID Pro 7 / Sketch / Original

It's not likely this will go anywhere without some drastic changes because everything is loops except the drums. The drums can stay. It was fun replicating the sound of every PSX racing game ever, though.

2NDFΔLL

Noisemarine, Bloody Murder / Hybrid Trap

2016 / 320kbps MP3 / No upload / ACID Music Studio 10 / Complete / Original

It was a brave new world for my music! I had just gotten my first desktop and had a proper system again after having lost a laptop to hard drive failure. So why not revisit some of my previous work that I thought was cool? I decided to do so with Fallen, my favorite song from that EP that I actually released in 2012. This was all well and good until sometime after finishing it I realized that I had taken way too much from a single sample pack source and that this kind of just resembled one of the demo songs for it. Oops. So this was never actually uploaded anywhere public. Still sounds bangin' tho.

Descend the Maw of Carbon Fiber and Steel (Azazel's Theme)

Noisemarine, Samatka / Breakcore

2015 / 320kbps MP3 / No upload / ACID Music Studio 10 / Complete / Original

This was meant to be the intro to an album I could never fully conceptualize so it fell kind of by the wayside. I still think it's dope, I might reuse this idea for something else once I do come up with some good album material in the future.

Archangel

Bloody Murder, Frostbreath / Trap

Aug 22, 2014 / 320kbps MP3 / YouTube / FL Studio 10 / Complete / Original

This song puts me into a category with such esteemed artists as Burial and Zomboy... in the array of artists who have made a song called "Archangel". This was made during a transition period after my hard drive crash where I was working on a loaner laptop until I could afford to buy a desktop, on software I was mostly unfamiliar with, but all things considered I feel this came out pretty well.

Destroid - 1. Raise Your Fist (Noisemarine Remix Demo)

Excision, Downlink, Space Laces, Noisemarine / Breakcore

2013 / 320kbps MP3 / No upload / ACID Pro 7 / Incomplete / Remix (Contest, not submitted)

I had some good ideas here but ran out of them too soon. Probably also one of the hardest things I've ever made but most of it is from the original stems, so not that much of it really counts. I'm still very happy about what I did with the drums on it, though.

Luna Rising (Demo)

Bloody Murder / Trap

2013 / 320kbps MP3 / No upload / ACID Pro 7 / Incomplete / Original

One of my first ventures into trying to make trap, sadly another victim of my old laptop's hard drive failure. Maybe one day I'll revisit this.

Odyssey Eurobeat - Discord (Noisemarine Remix Demo)

Odyssey Eurobeat, Noisemarine / Drumstep

2013 / 320kbps MP3 / No upload / ACID Pro 7 / Incomplete / Remix (Implicit authorization)

Maybe I dodged a bullet by not completing this and sharing anywhere or I might have been irreversibly linked to the brony fandom. For better or worse, lol. I think I had a bunch of interesting ideas here (before running out of them), with some novel instrumentation choices (for me), though overall this bites Knife Party's style too much to feel like I did a proper job with this.

Pokémon Diamond & Pearl - Lake (S.P Cover Demo)

Hitomi Sato, Junichi Masuda, Smooth.Play

2013 / 320kbps MP3 / No upload / Acid Pro 7 / Incomplete / Cover

Alas, another victim of the hard drive failure. I don't do a lot of video game covers or remixes but this one got me to try a bunch of things I hadn't really thought about before.

Stan SB - Dead (Frostbreath & Noisemarine Remix Demo)

Stan SB, Frostbreath, Noisemarine / Drumstep

2013 / 320kbps MP3 / No upload / ACID Pro 7 / Incomplete / Remix (Implicit authorization)

I think this is probably the one thing I was the most heartbroken to lose the project file of in the hard drive failure. It was pretty much done aside from replacing the drop bass, and alas, I also lost the stems and they were taken down around the same time. I'd definitely be putting this in the green category if I had managed to complete it.

The Queenstons - Figurehead (Frostbreath Remix)

The Queenstons, Frostbreath / Drum & Bass

Dec 3, 2012 / 320kbps MP3 / YouTube / ACID Pro 7 / Complete / Remix (Implicit authorization)

The main notable thing about this remix is probably the fact that this is the thing I made when I was learning about audio filtering, and overall, the filter/breaks work on this is probably my favorite part of it, starting my love of those airy highpassed drum breaks. I also can't help but love that really goofy synth solo starting at 3:39.

Robert G - Highest Mountain (Frostbreath Remix Demo)

Robert G, Frostbreath / Dance Pop

2012 / 320kbps MP3 / Fur Affinity / ACID Pro 7 / Incomplete / Remix (Bootleg)

Since I made a habit of deleting remix kits after the contest ended I was surprised to find the zip file containing this thing's remix kit again while browsing stuff I had rescued off an old computer. Well, it just fortunately happened to be for the first remix contest I had ever taken part in and I figured, why not test myself against my 15 year old self to see how far I had gone? Well, I still like what I made but I kind of just ran out of ideas and then proceeded to lose the file like everything else from this era. My 20 year self still claims victory though. Might be time for my 29 year self to step in since I'm pretty sure I still have the kit...

The Queenstons - The Answer (Noisemarine Remix)

The Queenstons, Noisemarine / Dubstep

May 7, 2011 / 320kbps MP3 / YouTube / ACID Pro 7 / Complete / Remix (Implicit authorization)

>Want to make a tune that emphasizes the sub bass more, like the "old school dubstep"
>proceed to completely fuck up the sub
You know, aside from that travesty this isn't so bad. It's got a couple of ideas here that I'm still decently fond of.

Usher - Yeah (Bloody Murder & Frostbreath Remix)

Usher, Ludacris, Lil Jon, Bloody Murder, Frostbreath / R&B, hip hop

Sep 18, 2010 / 320kbps MP3 / YouTube / ACID Pro 7 / Complete / Remix (Bootleg)

I had a short stint of being really into the music that was playing on the radio roughly during 2002-2006 ish, which resulted in a decent amount of tunes there permanently lodged into my memory, among which the original of this. At some point I got my mitts on a huge collection of 'a capella' files that consisted mostly of rips from hiphop and r&b from the 90s and 00s... and this was on it so I ended up making this with a random loop I had made some months prior becoming the main hook. It worked out pretty well, not much I'd do with this to update to my current standards aside from the usual mix concerns and maybe spiffy up the drums.

Fauxotic

Noisemarine / Dubstep

Feb 13, 2010 / 320kbps MP3 / Fur Affinity / ACID Pro 7 / Complete / Original

Dubstep that doesn't wobble? Heresy!! Funnily enough I eventually did make a wobbly version of this that's on the Warhead EP. Also, you can find a lossless version of this original mix there, if that's something you're into. Though I'm not really sure what difference it makes with my terrible mixing, but I'm really not qualified to say.

East Clubbers - Silence (Frostbreath & Menace Remix)

East Clubbers, Frostbreath, Menace / Happy Hardcore

2010 / 320kbps MP3 / No upload / Cubase SX3 / Complete / Remix (Implicit authorization)

I'm pretty sure I at least started this back in 2009 or even 8, but the file says 2010 so idk. That might just be when I completed it because I know I had this unfinished for a good while. In any case, I think this was the only time I ever made something that approached actual happy hardcore if we go by the strict definition of the style prominent in 90s rave culture. BIG REVERB BREAKBEAT TRANSITION.

Remember

Menace / Old School Rave Hardcore

2010 / 128kbps MP3 / No upload / ACID / Complete / Original

Funnily enough considering the title, I have almost no memory of making this. Like, I think I just made this while on an old school rave kick and promptly forgot about it until I discovered it again several years later and went like "Oh hey, this is a bop".

Corridor 60

Niterider / Breakbeat

Aug 1, 2009 / 128kbps MP3 / Fur Affinity / ACID Xpress 7 / Complete / Original

When I made this song, I was conflicted about which alias to put this under and said as much to a friend who I was sharing my music work with at the time. We ended up conceptualizing a new alias for work that was too hard for Frostbreath (which was restricted to more melodic stuff in the EDM sphere), but too slow for D3F0RM3D, and out of that brainstorming came Niterider, a sort of blatant humanization of the Knight Rider car. It wasn't a particularly long lived alias considering I was just around the corner of getting into Dubstep, which demanded its own alias, and I ended up merging those two to create the Noisemarine alias eventually, as you can see in the tags on this MP3.

Fredrik Miller - Helios (Frostbreath Cover)

Fredrik Miller, Frostbreath / Breakbeat

Apr 6, 2009 / 320kbps MP3 / Fur Affinity / Cubase SX3 / Complete / Cover

I originally called this a remix but it's probably more accurately described as a cover considering it has no actual audio in common with the original. Back when I was enough of a weirdo to make birthday presents for artists who didn't know me at all, but hey, it seemed to be well received and I still like this well enough so in the end it was worth it anyway!

Totally Stoned

D3F0RM3D, Bloody Murder / Drum & Bass

2009 / 128kbps MP3 / No upload / ACID Xpress 7 / Complete / Original

I've gone back and forth so many times on whether I like this or not. As of 2021, when I'm writing this, I had just listened to it in order to make the decision of whether to upload it or not, I've decided I like it again now, though I feel that the 'bass' part of 'drum & bass's is kind of lacking. In any case, this was definitely made with the intent of being goofy at the time so it kinda works out. I also think this is the only time I've ever made any references, however vague, to drugs in any of my music through titles, sample use, or otherwise. I may be forgetting about some by this time though, but it barely matters though. It's just kinda cute in that awkward teenager way.

The New Beginning

Frostbreath / Dance

Sep 28, 2008 / Fur Affinity / Cubase SX3 / Complete / Original

In Anno Domini 2021, it feels kinda quaint that I called something I made in 2008 "the new beginning", when I had only started producing in 2006. But hey, it represents what remains probably the first major paradigm shift in the way I thought of making music, considering it was the first time I was using a fully featured DAW, writing my very own, very special loops (though technically I had been doing that for a while before finally getting comfortable enough with Cubase's UI to commit to making a full song on it, since I made loops on there to use in songs I made in ACID as far back as 2007). The end result is... cute, I guess. It's not terrible, but it's not very good either. Mostly a mishmash of elements I really liked from a) what I had been listening to from ACIDplanet at the time, and b) VST presets I liked. God, I was so fond of Sytrus at this time. I don't even use Sytrus anymore, lol.

The B-52s - Funplex (DJDS Remix)

The B-52s, DJDS / Breakbeat

2008 / 48kbps WMA / ACIDplanet / ACID Xpress 5 / Complete / Remix (Contest)

Uuuuugh. This is another one I'm gonna file under 'squandered potential'. Mostly because the track limit forced me to use only a handful of the vocal parts provided or the backing music would've been even more repetitive and weirdly minimalistic. So when I made this I had never heard of The B-52s before. But I did peg it as this goofy, fun kinda song so my first instinct was to goof it even more by pitching it up a little and I honestly cringe a bit at it today but oh well. Such is the mixed benefit of hindsight. Still wish I could go back and at the very least put the full vocals in, bleh.

Blue Room Project - Distro (DJDS Remix 1)

Blue Room Project, DJDS / Trance

2007 / 48kbps WMA / ACIDplanet / ACID Xpress / Complete / Remix (Contest)

Might possibly be my first attempt at trance that comes kinda close to it, idk. The ten track limit really hamstrung me on this one, I had enough ideas for 3 remixes.

Expansion

DJDS / Electronic

2007 / 48kbps WMA / ACIDplanet / ACID Xpress 5 / Complete / Original

I think this was the second ever song that I actually gave a name as opposed to just at the time calling them "Project #X". This song was originally made at 120bpm like basically everything I made back then but I made the weird decision to speed this up to 135 just so I could squeeze it in as the last track on a CD-R. Funny how that works out.

Paul Schwartz - Christe Redemptor (DJDS Remix)

Paul Schwartz, DJDS / Breakbeat

2007 / 128kbps WMA / ACIDplanet / ACID Pro 5 / Complete / Remix (Contest)

So, I had just gotten my grubby mitts on a (pirated) copy of ACID Pro 5, and with it came an unlimited number of tracks, and thus, UNLIMITED POWER. I used it to incorporate the entirety of the vocals (except the ad-libs), which were cut into multiple loops, as was the style at the time for ACIDplanet remix contests. I also used it to add a small bunch of flourish loops and sound effects which would usually end up being cut to fit more crucial elements into songs in the past. Including that obnoxious bang that I left in at the end there, lol. But yeah, this Christian New Age thing was a ride. I will always remember that one comment that told me "it made [them] want to find Jesus and dance with him".

Point Blank - Meng's Theme (DJDS Remix)

Point Blank, DJDS / House

2007 / 128kbps WMA / No upload / ACID Xpress / Complete / Remix (Implicit authorization)

This was probably my first time venturing outside of ACIDplanet for a contest, to a site called FOEM, but I didn't actually enter that contest. Instead, I took a shine to the bonus loop included with the contest package for one Jeroen Verheij or Secret Cinema, who had previously made it big in the 90s with the classic "Meng's Theme". Not that I knew that at the time. Probably some of the more serviceable work I did back then, I'd still drop this in a DJ set if I found an appropriate place to do so.

RFID - Take The Shot (D3F0RM3D Remix)

RFID, D3F0RM3D / Aggrotech

2007 / 48kbps WMA Acid Xpress 5 / ACIDplanet / Complete / Remix (Contest)

I had very little to go on when I was looking into some historical specifics of this untagged WMA file - all I knew was that it was for a remix contest at AP for this band/group called "RFID" that is really hard to find any info on. The archived contest page only links to a myspace page which of course doesn't exist anymore either. When I write this stuff for my older remixes I like to check the original for comparison, but no dice here. In any case, this is probably the only time that the 48kbps WMA compression kinda works in the service of the concept I've got for a song. I think the only parts of the original I actually used here was the DJ chatter so the original probably sounds way different. Very weird all around.

The Golden Step

DJDS / Techno

2007 / 48kbps WMA / ACIDPlanet / ACID Xpress 5 / Complete / Original

Back in the day, Sony would give out a weekly pack of loops selected from their sample collections with a little song made out of them, called "8packs", as in, a pack of 8 loops. One of those was called "The Silver Step" and me, being a teenager, immediately thought, "but what if I made something based on this? it could be called THE GOLDEN STEP. I'M SUCH A GENIUS". I dunno, but it resulted in this, which I think is pretty passable. I never made actual techno again though.

The Golden Step VIP

DJDS / Breakbeat

2007 / 48kbps WMA / ACIDplanet / Complete / Original

I had some new ideas on the execution of The Golden Step. I overall prefer this to the original, I think.

Robert G - Highest Mountain (DJDS Remix v2)

Robert G, DJDS / Dance Pop

2006 / 48kbps WMA / ACIDPlanet / ACID Xpress 5 / Complete / Remix (Contest)

This is one version of the first remix I ever made. I ended up with three iterations of it overall that I'm going to try to find, I think the only copy of v1 is on a CD-R somewhere. For this version in particular, I remember that I was really struggling on finding an appropriate bass loop on the computer I was working on so I ended up with... this.

Robert G - Highest Mountain (DJDS Remix v3)

Robert G, DJDS / Dance Pop

2006 / 48kbps WMA / ACIDplanet / ACID Xpress 5 / Complete / Remix (Contest)

The follow-up entry that really should've just been a reupload but I kinda like having my process through this remix documented like that because you can really see my growth through figuring out making it sound like I wanted. Which, well, didn't really happen until I revisited it in 2012, but that's another story. Here, I got a bit more brazen with the loop cutting, and you can see ACID's automatic loop keying in action during the semitone shift up, where the bass suddenly sounds good because it went -11 semitones instead of +1. Didn't really learn that lesson until much later though.
